How Often Should You Have Your Dog Groomed?

Having your dog regularly groomed by a professional is an excellent idea for several reasons. It helps keep your pet looking good, of course, but it will also keep them healthy. By keeping your dog’s fur from getting matted and tangled, it can protect them from avoidable skin irritation and infections. That’s why it’s wise to find a groomer you trust and develop a consistent schedule.

How frequently you need to take your dog to the groomer depends on several factors. Here are some questions you may want to consider.

How long is my dog’s fur?

As a general rule, the longer your dog’s fur is, the more prone it is to matting—and the more often it needs to be professionally groomed. A long-haired dog should probably go to the groomer at least once every six weeks. Dogs with shorter hair are less likely to collect dust in their fur and get their hair tangled. Thus, you may only need to have them groomed once every three months.

If your dog has a thick undercoat, then you will probably want to have them groomed quarterly, if not more frequently. You can also brush your pet at home at least once a week to keep their fur clean and shiny.

Does my dog have any allergies?

Just like their owners, dogs can be significantly bothered by seasonal allergies. If your pet is badly affected by dust and pollen, then regular grooming will help. Other dogs, however, may have their allergies worsened by frequent grooming. To ensure that you develop a schedule that will work best for your dog’s needs, talk to your veterinarian. They will help determine a grooming routine that will be most beneficial for your pet.

Does my dog go outdoors frequently?

If you have a dog that is outside most of the time, then it’s likely that you’ll want to have them groomed more regularly. In addition to keeping their coat free of dust and pollen, routine grooming will also help to protect them from pests such as fleas and mites.

However, even if you have an indoor dog, it’s still important to keep them well-groomed. If you are unsure how often your pet needs to go to the groomer, ask your vet for advice. You can even ask them for a recommendation.
